Windows 10: Virtual Machine w/SOLIDWORKS 2016 for Educational use

This is a preconfigured Windows 10 virtual machine created by IS&T in Spring 2017 and designed for use only by MIT students that need to access SOLIDWORKS 2016.

How to obtain

Download (MIT certificate required)

  • Click the Download button on this page.
    Note: The VM download file is very large, approximately 12 GB.  Download times typically range from 20 minutes to 2 hours depending on the speed of your network connection to MIT.  We do not recommend downloading via dialup.

Installing

Using

Notes:

  • Important data should NOT be stored within the VM. There is no good mechanism for backing up data stored in the VM itself as standard troubleshooting practices will include downloading a new copy of the Virtual Machine. 
  • Firefox should only be used for accessing web sites that require Windows-specific software, not for general purpose web browsing.
About this Version 

This is a preconfigured Windows virtual machine created by IS&T and designed for MIT students to access Solidworks 2016 Student Edition.

  • Firefox

System requirements:

Support

  • IS&T can only provide full support for the process of obtaining certificates in Firefox.
  • All other applications included with the VM are provided on an "as-is" basis.
  • Dassault Systemes provides technical support for SOLIDWORKS 2016.

You can also request a free consultation visit. Once we have evaluated your space, we'll provide a cost estimate for your review.

Requirements

Repairs: Basic service costs (regular repairs, access changes, licenses, and administrative fees) are covered by CSSI. A fee will be charged for special service requests.

Installations: You are responsible for installation and equipment costs. CSSI will cover regular equipment maintenance and basic repair costs.

macOS High Sierra (10.13)

Known Issues

Software / Site Issue
AFS Clients Clients installed on High Sierra with APFS may cause kernel panics. Auristor has provided an updated version. Click Available Installers at the top to find it. Do not upgrade to High Sierra until this patch is installed. You should also review the vendor documentation prior to upgrade.
Crowdstrike Falcon Current version is not compatible with macOS High Sierra and will fail to install. There should not be issues with an OS upgrade. However, functionality may be degraded until a new version is released.
Deep Freeze Incompatible with High Sierra and APFS.
Drop BoxSmart Sync functionality may not work properly with High Sierra and APFS.
Microsoft Office

Requires version 15.35 or higher in order to function. Upgrade Office prior to High Sierra. Microsoft Office support for macOS 10.13 High Sierra

Sophos Antivirus

Requires version 9.6.4 or higher in order to properly function. Previously installed clients will auto upgrade to 9.6.4. Installers older than 9.6.4 should be deleted.
Note: High Sierra has a new security feature called SKEL that blocks unauthorized kernel extensions like the one Sophos uses for on-access scanning. More information, including the download, are available on IS&T's Sophos Anti-Virus Licensing page.

macOS Catalina (10.15)

Licensing

macOS Catalina is available from the Apple App Store for all to use.

Installation

Known issues

  • 32 bit applications will not work on macOS Catalina. You will need to stay on a lower version until you can find alternative software. More information on how to find which of your apps are 32 bit is available in the Knowledge Base.
  • Apple has extended the PPPC and TTC protocols to include users Documents, Desktops, and Downloads. This means software like CrashPlan and Sophos cannot access these directories by default with granting full disk access manually. Machines enrolled in the IS&T Jamf instance will have this issue automatically resolved. Manual steps for granting an application full disk access is available in the Knowledge Base.
  • Third party kernel extensions (such as Sophos, Crowdstrike, and VMware) will require a reboot before they take effect.
  • Apple has deprecated language runtimes including python, ruby, and perl. They will not be included in future versions of macOS.

Pharos Uniprint Pharos Uniprint 9.0.10 fully supports macOS Catalina. You can download this version from the software grid.
