Download and installation

  1. Download the free Explain Everything Whiteboard application from the Apple App Store (iOS) or from the Google Play store (Android) on your mobile device, or visit explaineverything.com to create an account using your computer.
  2. Sign up with your @mit.edu email to obtain your license. You will need to create a unique, strong password for this account. Do NOT use your MIT Kerberos password for your Explain Everything Account.

Licensing

macOS Big Sur is available from the Apple App Store for all to use.

Installation

Known issues

  • Kernel extensions have been deprecated and replaced with system extensions. Software using kernel extensions may no longer function appropriately without a new version of the software.
  • Apple has released the new M1 chip based on the ARM architecture. Most software will run in compatibility mode via Rosetta 2. Currently Windows virtualization including Boot Camp will not function on these devices. Learn more about the M1 chip and the Rosetta Translation Environment.
  • Testing has taken place on Intel based Macs only. M1 Macs have not been tested and functionality may be impacted. Please check back on this page for further updates.
Software / Site Issue
Adobe Flash Safari 14 does not support Adobe Flash.
Auristor AFS Auristor AFS has released version .201 which is Big Sur supported. Please download the latest version.
Cambridge Structural Database CSD will fail to install on macOS Big Sur.
Cisco Anyconnect Cisco AnyConnect has been deprecated at MIT. Please install GlobalProtect instead. Learn more.
CrashPlan CrashPlan does not currently support macOS Big Sur. Code42 expects a release in the next 60 days to provide support. In our testing backups and restores currently do work.
Crowdstrike Falcon Falcon 6.12 and higher support macOS Big Sur. You can download the latest version on the software grid.
LabVIEW LabVIEW will fail to install on macOS Big Sur.
Microsoft OfficeMicrosoft Office 16.44 provides support for macOS Big Sur as well as for M1 Macs.
Pharos Uniprint Big Sur no longer supports certain print drivers. Download the latest version from the software grid to bypass this issue.
SAPgui SAPgui may not authenticate properly using Ticket Viewer. Visit our Knowledge Base for a workaround.
Sophos Antivirus Sophos is not supported at this time. Sophos may disable itself upon install on macOS Big Sur. Follow these instructions in the Knowledge Base to avoid this scenario.
Spirion Spirion is currently unsupported and may not function appropriately. We will update the software grid when a new supported version is available.
SPSS SPSS 27.0.1.0 supports macOS Big Sur with some exceptions.
Tableau Tableau Reader will not install on M1 Macs until a new version is released.
VMware Fusion VMware Fusion for Mac version 12 and later fully supports macOS Big Sur. Note: The new M1 chips do not allow for x86 virtualization and Windows VMs will likely fail to run. Intel based Macs should continue to work.

DocuSign is a cloud service that provides electronic signature technology for the signing of contracts and signed documents.

DocuSign lets you store all your documents in the cloud to track and provide an audit trail of signatures. Access hundreds of ready-to-use applications using a variety of document types, integrate with Dropbox and Google Drive, and connect via mobile using the DocuSign App.

Accessing

DocuSign is Touchstone-enabled. Once you have set up your account, you will be able to log in using an MIT personal certificate or Kerberos username and password.

Qualtrics is an enterprise survey service available to the MIT community. It is used to conduct surveys, evaluations, and other data collection activities. Qualtrics supports the creation of both simple surveys and complicated survey workflows that are available to users via mobile-friendly format with multi-lingual options.

How to obtain

Licensing

Qualtrics is licensed for use by MIT students, faculty, staff, and affiliates. Use of the system is subject to the Qualtrics Rules of Use, Best Practices, and Limitations.

ACADEMIC LICENSE: Use of this service is restricted to academic or research purposes. This includes research sponsored by third parties and those provided in the Master Services Agreement. It explicitly excludes any use of Qualtrics for commercial use. MIT’s Qualtrics service may not be assigned to or used by any commercial entity or user.

Note: This license is restricted to current MIT faculty/staff/students evaluating other current MIT faculty/staff/students. It is not to be used to run projects funded by corporations doing their own internal/external reviews with the help of an MIT faculty member's account. Such projects would require a corporate license.

    Note: There are currrently no hard video storage limits in place for MIT's Panopto instance.

IS&T provides IT accessories for instructors to use in MIT classrooms, as well as ethernet cables for staff and students, through a set of self-service vending machines in several convenient locations on campus.

These machines also provide KF94 face masks to any MIT community member who accesses campus via Covid Pass. 

These supplies are provided at no charge. Tap your digital MIT ID on your phone or your MIT ID card to the machine’s reader and select the item you need.

Individuals may obtain one mask every three days (no more than two per week). These high-quality KF94 masks can be worn for up to 40 hours of use, unless damaged or soiled. Other options for obtaining high quality masks include the following:

  • Departments, labs, and centers can order via MIT’s Covid Store
  • Students can pick up masks in living groups and residence halls
  • Community members can pick up a mask at the W20 test drop-off location
  • Or, you can obtain your own following CDC guidelines

Note: Product usage limits are in place to ensure sufficient availability for community members. If you find that you need more IT accessories than what is provided, contact the IS&T Service Desk.
